The whales sharks

(Rhincodon typus)

The whale shark, the largest fish in existence is without doubt one of the most spectacular sea creaures while at the same time the least known on the planet. It can measure up to 18 meters long and weigh 34 tons.

It is believed the whale shark is migratory although its geographic movements have not been able to be precisely defined.

Offspring come from an egg inside the mother, who bears them live. The whale shark is dark blue in color on top and white underneath. Its body is covered with white spots and vertical lines, the head and back area have several wide longitudinal protrusions. Because of its docility and size this fish is a great attraction for sport divers. It is found in tropical seas and ocean coasts between 30°N and 35°S.

The whale shark is one of 3 shark species that filter plankton, seaweed, fish and small crustaceans for food.

Factors which threaten conservation of whale sharks because of ecotourism :

. Cuts and disturbance by boats with outboard motors
. Entanglements in fishing nets
. Over visitation by visitors
. Risk of habitat modification by large marine development projects

In the Holbox-Contoy area males as well as females are found. This may be due to the areas prevailing currents which help accumulate their food.

As a filtering fish the whale shark depends entirely on the good quality of its habitat. Modifications of this habitat could negatively affect the species.

The whale sharks characteristic slow growth, late maturity, size and longevity make it a fragile species.

Since March 6, 2002, Mexico has classified the whale shark as
an endangered species, with the "Norma Oficial Mexicana"
(NOM-059-ECOL-2001)
